A 600-acre Sarasota County park with 400 acres of water surface, Nathan Benderson Park is best known as a rowing and paddling venue. Home of the 2017 World Rowing Championship, the Olympic team trials for rowing and canoe/kayak for the Rio and Tokyo Olympiads, the NCAA Rowing Championships and more, the 2000-meter championship course has made a name for itself. But the park is also the home to dragon boat paddling, canoe/kayak, paddleboard and radio-control sailboat competition as well as many road races, including half-marathons and 5Ks. Community events from walkathons to festivals to musical performances to fundraisers dot the NBP calendar, as well. And you can't forget the casual use of the park, from the ever-popular playground to the 3.4 miles of parallel paved and shell trails for walking, running, bicycling, rollerblading and more. When the water's not in use for competition, it's great for recreational paddling, rowing and sailing, as well as for fishing from shore and from boats (note: no gas engines allowed).
